What is an IBCLC?

what is an "IBCLC?"

How is it different than other breastfeeding helpers?

The IBCLC certification is the highest level of lactation credentialing. It is internationally recognized & takes years to obtain.

To become an IBCLC, one must have at least 1,000 clinical hours, 90 hours of lactation-specific courses, 14 college-level health courses (anatomy & physiology/statistics) and also pass a rigorous board exam. We also are required to do 75 hours of continued education courses to recertify every 5 years.

Unfortunately, anyone can call themselves a "lactation consultant," and some credentials are essentially a weekend class. It is important to know their level of training & certification. While all promotion of breastfeeding is great, just know that when you are seeing an IBCLC, you are getting the highest level of lactation support.

Oral Habilitation

oral habilitation

I have completed the 31 hour Masterclass: Oral Habilitation of the Breastfeeding Dyad. There are currently only two IBCLCs in our region who have this certification.

This extensive course is taught by myofuctional therapists, speech therapists  & broadens the ability to analyze challenging situations, oral dysfunction and most importantly, help families to achieve their goals. We can assess full functional oral function and help clients with exercises to do at home to gain function.

About Me

I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. I have six children (ages 4 to 19). I had breastfeeding struggles with 5 out of my 6 kids-- & that journey is what started my path to becoming an IBCLC. Years of studying while my little ones were asleep, hundreds of clinical hours and a board exam later, & here we are...

I am detail oriented and love continued learning. I tend to be a bit on the "clinical" side (love me some scrubs and spreadsheets), but also have a crunchy side by default.

Lactation is such an amazing field- it is so primal, so messy & so beautiful.  I think that we can reconnect to our ancestral knowledge as women & be empowered to care for ourselves and our families.
